Volume housebuilders fit the minimum acceptable spec. Within 2–5 years, most Wiltshire homeowners want it gone. We specialise in new-build upgrades — with UFH-compatible specification, development-specific knowledge, and warehouse prices.
The honest truth
Volume housebuilders — Persimmon, Barratt, Taylor Wimpey, Bellway, Vistry — are building thousands of homes across Wiltshire right now. Every one of them is fitted with the minimum carpet and vinyl grade that passes building regulations and keeps their margin intact.
That typically means a 28–32oz twist carpet, standard 10mm underlay, and basic sheet vinyl in the kitchen and bathrooms. It looks fine on handover day. Within 18 months of family use, the difference becomes obvious.
There's a more serious issue too. Most new builds have underfloor heating. Standard thick underlay blocks the heat output and voids your UFH manufacturer warranty. Many homeowners don't discover this until they have a problem — and by then, the wrong flooring has already been fitted.
10mm standard underlay has a tog rating of ~2.5. Most UFH systems require max 1.5 tog combined (floor + underlay). Your builder almost certainly fitted the wrong spec.
Builder-grade carpet is specified for appearance on handover day, not for 10 years of family life. Most homeowners notice significant wear within 2–3 years.
Floor coverings are cosmetic finishes. Replacing them has no impact on your NHBC Buildmark structural warranty. You're free to upgrade at any time.
Critical for new builds
Most new builds have UFH. The wrong flooring blocks heat output and voids your system warranty. We specify every installation to be UFH-compatible — and we'll tell you exactly what works and what doesn't.
| Flooring Type | UFH Rating | Typical Tog | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) | ✓✓ Excellent | 0.05–0.10 | Best choice for UFH. Thin profile, excellent heat transfer. Works with all UFH systems. |
| Engineered Wood | ✓ Good | 0.10–0.15 | Dimensionally stable. Suitable for UFH. Avoid solid wood — it moves with heat. |
| Laminate | ✓ Good | 0.05–0.10 | Suitable if UFH-rated. Always check manufacturer specification before fitting. |
| Low-Tog Carpet | ~ Suitable | Max 1.5 combined | Only low-tog carpet with UFH-rated underlay. Max 1.5 tog total (floor + underlay). We specify this correctly. |
| Standard Carpet + Thick Underlay | ✗ Incompatible | Often 2.5+ | Blocks heat output. Voids UFH manufacturer warranty. This is what many builders fit — and why it needs replacing. |
| Wool Twist Carpet | ✗ Often incompatible | Variable — often too high | Wool is a natural insulator. Many wool blends exceed the 1.5 tog limit. Always check before fitting over UFH. |
Our guarantee: Every WCW new-build installation is specified to be UFH-compatible. We check the tog rating of every product we fit over underfloor heating. If it's not compatible, we won't fit it — and we'll tell you why. No voided warranties. No blocked heat. No surprises.
